Music Of The Week Playlist.
I think listening to music that you see in the most random places, or music people put you on is actually the best way to get to know new music. I was watching flashysillah’s Instagram story and I heard him playing pavements and in his next story he linked the whole ep. Bear in mind it’s around 11am on a Friday, usually I’d save the listen for later on in the day but I’ve recently contracted covid so nowhere to go and nothing better to do. #1 Let’s start with Left Right Left. Now through his whole debut mixtape there are so many musical sounds which definitely made me stick to listening throughout, there were no skips. The little Rihanna line from her song “Man Down” was incredible because I love the way he put his own spin on it, yet it was still instantly recognisable. His voice always makes the song, it’s really what makes this mixtape unique and sits so well with the drums he reminds me of Young B a little actually. #2 Pavements Now this song was the song I’d heard Sillah playing and had advanced to listening to first. He referenced it being a winter anthem and I understand the idea behind that as through the whole song he’s painting a picture of the outdoors “Chilling with the gang” as he says himself. The song depicts an image of hardships within real life, but I think he also appreciates that everyone’s reality is different. “You can never get cosy on the pavements”. #3 Monzo feat. One Acen I think recently One Acen has started to find his musical independence again, and he’s definitely defining his place within the industry, one that can never be replaced. “I’m an east african jungle boy, stepped all in the spot like a london boy” for someone that doesn’t know much about this artist the effort to resonate with his audience by familiarity honestly makes me believe he’ll fit right into the UK music scene. This one was a vibe, unexpected duo but yet I wasn’t disappointed. #4 Pull Up Feels like the most hood romantic love song. The beat has an element of dancehall/bashment to it which literally makes it a perfect song to play in a club or any type of dance, there are immaculate vibes to this tune, proper warm and comforting. At this point, pull up g. #5 Amnesia Amnesia is an instant head bop, he’s speaking his truth disguised in one of the most upbeat songs on the mixtape. I really like the last 15 seconds of the song, the fade and soft voice really does it for an outro. Top 5 of street serenade? I think this has become one of my favourite mixtapes, to me wauve has set in stone the footprint he wants to make as a UK artist and this project has serenaded me indeed. It’s around 11:40am and I need breakfast - Miriam.

I feel like I dream big. Sometimes not big enough, sometimes too big. I have hopes and aspirations within other streams that I love but I equally face that fear of really indulging and giving it my all. I never really had a start that pushed me within music, a start being a substance that made it feel right for me, but then again there’s always a story that could be dug up for my genesis. That is if I was to be famous. Obviously one of these streams being music has me questioning what I intend my impact to be in the industry, I’m scared of trying and sounding just like everyone else or even worse, sounding inferior to everyone else. I think I’m currently standing outside the profession because quite frankly I think it’s easier and safer. What would I like to do within the music industry? This question written exactly as so is in my writing points, even though I knew I didn’t have a straight answer to this. I would like to dabble in a bit of everything, I want to learn how to DJ just because I have a sharp ear for mixes, so much so that the mixes in my head are what I believe to be the original song at times. What’s a little lyric overlap between artists anyways? More than anything I want to produce. The putting together of a beat amazes me, it seems like such a fanatic to me because even when I listen to a song I always pull it apart in my head. Every repeat of a tune sticks out a new component to me by the end of it. Plus I like the ring of my name as a producer tag. I want to actually make a song. I wish I could whisper that but it’s in writing now. Either way I know this one’s in the far future. Recently I’ve been getting a couple of interactions back to the analysis’ of people’s, tracks, albums, just bodies of work in general and it’s opened my eyes to a couple of things within the industry. A lot of artist’s are kinder than you think they are. When I get things wrong like for example mistype the title, or mix up an album with a mixtape they’re not biting your head off about it. As much as it was my choice to write up their piece of work they equally understand that it’s not going to be perfect. A mentality I respect. I’ve also seen that no one is opening doors for you. It’s not necessarily that people aren’t trying to help but when you haven’t exactly made it you can’t help other people into oblivion. Independence is something a lot of artists learn when entering this industry as not everyone is out to help you up. Either way even if I wasn’t to make a living out of music, I’d still like to learn these things to hold them as attributes that I can proudly own, just because of the person I am. A slippery slope to music - Miriam.
Music Of The Week Playlist.
I did this a couple months ago detailing a few of songs that I had discovered or re-discovered and was bumping at the time, I guess it’s that season once more. So at #1 I have, You Don’t Know - Munna. I put this at number one simply because I want everyone to hear this song. I was put on and I’m hoping to put on a couple of people too. This one is special to me because he exemplifies his youth really well, Munna’s music is very different, now some may say it follows what rap/drill is today but I can confidently say he took it and put his own spin on it. What was a freestyle became a song I literally can’t go a day without playing. Absolutely goated. #2 Basildon - KwolleM feat. Joe James Now I’ve known about the whole c2c album for a while but I was taken aback since I’ve re-entered my rap fanatic. KwolleM’s voice is one I can never get sick of and when he tells me about this girl he met to go get chinese? I feel as though I was there eating that “shite chinese” with him. #3 Car Song - Dizzilo. This one specifically sticks out to me because I love storytelling music. I’ve known about this one since it came out but I re-visited it when he announced he was releasing Politics soon. The wordplay, the beat, even the music video is unique. I remember after I’d listened to this I fell down a searching spiral and stumbled across “Midnight” by him, Odeal & Jayo. The progress is immaculate and I can still vibe to Midnight as if it was released today. Some real musical talent. #4 Cynical - Jordy. I can’t lie before a couple of weeks ago I hadn’t listened to SMH, I was so in love with “Uber X” and “Visions” I thought that was enough. This song is so short it gets me mad. When he’s talking about wanting to release music back to back and drops the line, “They’ve all gotta hear this” it makes me realise that he’s in love with his music as much as I am, even more perhaps. An artist truly knows when they’re sitting on a hit, it’s only a matter of time. I really do love this one. It's very realistic, I hope he made more time for the studio because we need a plethora of music this year. Honourable shoutout’s to Gunna’s new album - DS4EVER - and Jhus’ Big Conspiracy even though the biggest conspiracy is to why he hasn’t dropped music all now. Take the music out of the man and what does he become? - Miriam.
Last but most definitely not least, at #5 Mop feat. Young Thug.
Young Thug has a very special place in my heart and so I don’t know where he’d be if not in this top 5. This tune is such a vibe and some very intellectual storytelling, a lot of people feel like young thug just waffles the most but his storytelling is only understood by the elite. These were my top 5 but honourable shout out to: alotta cake, Too easy remix, Private Island & Livin’ Wild. Overall this was a very well-rounded album, with continuous vibes. I’ve asked for so many opinions on this album specifically because I think it’s important to know the different takes on it. Either way DS4 was a success. Our last drip season - Miriam.

By now it should be clear that I do these in no particular order unless specified. To start off, I think I’ll introduce what may be my favourite song on this album, Secret. Now the line “Just did a mad ting, but I can’t tell nobody”, resonates with me too much. To the point where every single time this song starts I have to prepare myself before this part comes because I shout it with all chest and no regret. He also said that this song is “basically a freestyle”, which in my opinion is great content for technically something that wasn’t intended to be said, it was just said. I don’t necessarily know what it is about this song but it’s something you know? If any of the songs were devoted to me, it’d have to be this one: it's the story of my life. #2 Somebody Else Now I must be honest, at the time this album came out and I had gone through my first run through I knew this one was on repeat. What can I say, I was a bit broken. But Mo really spoke the truth, just tell me if you’re with somebody else like since when was it that deep? #3 Tehng Style ft. JustPapers & J Tehng This was one of the ones I was unsure about, it was one that I giggled listening to, not because it was dead, but I was in between with how I felt with hearing Mostack on this beat. It’s in my top 5 so very clearly I grew to like this one. Tehngy Tehngy Tehngy! #4 Would You? This song had me questioning genuinely would I? Like for anyone WOULD I? I don’t think I would, they’re some very bold statements that I’d have to agree to and honestly I’m just not built for that. I actually quite liked the intro voicemail and his opening line “I don’t want a gyal I want a business partner” it makes me view “gyal” from his perspective as not long term but, you know what is long term? A business partner, provided you don’t receive bad business. And at #5 we have, Righteous. This song feels like a bunch of accomplishments, and I think I’ve said this multiple times now about a rapper having their come-up song and this felt similar to it. Not necessarily I was down and now I’m up but just, I’m ballin and I’m content with myself. That’s an amazing space to be in life if I do say so myself. Anyways all in all this album was definitely top tier, a lot of songs fighting for that top 5 spot. But I do believe though that it didn’t gain as much traction as maybe 017-19 stacko would’ve, but hey an inconsistent fan base for an inconsistent artist. Through the years he’s provided us with bangers though so I can’t complain he’s practically allowed to be the way he is. Overall, Mostack really did his thing on this one. “Old Mo with new tricks up his sleeve” - Miriam. |
