I think this might actually become a monthly update because new songs just find me all the time. No particular order as it always is: #1 we have Give Me - Lotto Ash. As soon as I heard this I knew it was going to be lush. In recent years Ash hasn’t been prominent in the music scene, especially after Lotto Boyz, and so I’m glad he’s on a comeback because his vocals are really out of this world. He deserves all the recognition possible because, this song?? It’s like drugs. #2 220 Freestyle - Romzy. Romzy came through on this one. I was shocked myself but he reciprocated the energy of the beat and this is his flow; didn’t disappoint at all. “16 when I done wireless & I done Redding & I done Leeds as well”. As an artist he’s proper come far and everyone needs to appreciate his come-up. Back when guys were listening to “Sharp”, ever since then he’s evolved into music like never before, honestly put some respect on his name. #3 Jetan (Pant Off) - Bryann Proper party vibe. I’ve lately been in my afrobeats bag and when I heard this it automatically stood out to me. Looking out for more from this artist for definite, 100% recommend. #4 Body On Me - Layzee Ella. The original & the acoustic version are both so hard. Honestly I wish I knew about this song sooner. #5 Bling (2 song EP). I always say when I’m listening to Marzi’s music it takes me a while to warm up to songs but when I do? I get addicted. Commando is my favourite out of the two. The beat is very tropical and Marzi does his thing as he always does, the collab with Efosa & Vianni was a perfect fit. #6 Money - Basketmouth, Oxlade & Efya. This sounds like heaven to me, “money be the root of evil” indeed. I hadn’t heard of Basketmouth before this tune but I definitely wouldn’t refrain from taking time to listen to this artist, this song is on replay. The Twi part really hits for me Efya did her thing, it's almost like the song stops for her because everyone is amazed as I am. The last 30 seconds or so for the outro is sensational, the repeated “I go spend, I go dey gaza oh” is just so mesmerising to me. Put me on - Miriam.

If you don’t know already this is one of my favourite albums. Now a lot of people don’t like young thug as an artist he’s very different to what’s mainstream - even though he is too - and at times he can say some outrageous things but hey, that just shows you’re listening. I have specific memories attached to this album, I remember sitting in the living room and my brother playing “You Said” for the first time and I just fell in love. I’ll be real, I didn't listen to the album straight after or for a long time actually but when I did, it just made me appreciate it so much more. This album is really a timeless piece to me. It really felt like I deprived myself of pure musical talent for so many years. Back then my music taste was very subjective - I was influenced by the people that surrounded me and well they were influenced by the charts. Anyways let’s get into our top 5. #1 You Said feat. Quavo This song has me trapped to this day. I remember after revisiting this song year after year I listened to the instrumental and let me tell you something now, even without lyrics this song is still unmatched. It’s the harp-like piano melody that has me locked in. His voice sits so well on this and the melodies fit so perfectly, usually I’d get sick of long songs because they become repetitive but I could listen to the whole 6 minutes and hit replay. #2 Do U Love Me It became one of my favourites after I’d listened to the whole album. I think this one is more about thug’s image. Obviously as a famous artist there are gonna be people who want you for what you have, not who you are. “Do you know who we are?” Is him acknowledging his image and what he has, but he also talk about how he’s done certain things out of his nature for the comfort of someone else. #3 Relationship feat Future Now this song is commercial but what can I say it’s a good song. They’ve both got very overzealous personalities, and future is basically saying he knows the key to every female, “I know how to make the girls go crazy, when you treat her like your number 1 baby.” #4 Daddy’s Birthday The intro to this one is very original to me, the little whispers here and there, him talking over himself kind of paints a little mentally unhinged image. But props to him because everyone is in their own way. I like the way the drum beat is above the melody and of course his voice above all, it leaves a lot more space for voice creativity. When he starts with the new flow, “Imma kill by any means...” it literally makes the song perfect and the beat follows him, not the other way around. #5 On Fire This tune is just a total vibe. With thug’s unique sound even when he sings “[he] needs a threesome” it doesn’t sound out of pocket. The beat on this one is a little bland - nonetheless I like the transitions on it - which means his voice really MAKES this song. So what I’m saying is, I’m obsessed with this album because it never fails to take me back to that place a couple years ago, I’ll sing thugga’s lyrics with no shame at all. Thugger’s main girl - Miriam.

Before I talk on the deluxe I want to speak a little on the original album Jazmine had blessed us with. It had me in a chokehold if I’m being completely honest, she never fails to speak her truth - which happens to always relate to me - and overall creates such beautiful songs. You can never go wrong with some Jaz. So what did she give us on the deluxe? 5 new tales & tunes. Issa’s Tale Tragic Jazzy’s Tale Hurt Me So Good A Breaux’s Tale Roster Mona’s Tale BPW Shanti’s Tale Selfish I believe my favourite story falls between two, “A Breaux’s Tale” & “Issa’s Tale”. Issa’s peaked my interest as she’s talking about this relationship that was coming to an end, and she wanted it to end well. her desire for sex from her partner was because of her fear of it being the last time they’d ever have sex, he underperformed and she confesses that she was cheating on him anyways. City girls 1 - 0. It was the fact that she came with so much audacity & bravery which made me love it. The “Breaux” tale got to me because it proper made me feel compassion for him. We need to normalise males stepping out of their comfort zones for females and also, communicating our positions with one another. When he said “she pulled a me on me” I couldn’t help but laugh because it’s definitely something I’d say. My top 3 out of the new 5 though... #1 we have BPW I think the deciding factor is the harmonies on this one. BPW has such a recognisable R&B type instrumental, she’s talking about seeking validity, sex, attachment, self-confidence and literally wrapped it up in the prettiest package ever. I’m obsessed. I can’t go a day without playing it. #2 Selfish These lyrics stuck to me way too quickly Jaz, what kind of crack you put in this one girlie? The guitar being the most prominent instrument on either of these songs - aside from her voice of course - is what makes it different, the song can flow in any course as to which she desires. The different octaves, riffs and harmonies as the song goes along just makes it better and better. “You want me to change, want me to risk everything, but don’t wanna make no sacrifices.” Literally depicting the selfish nature of not only men, but women too these days. Everyone else is about themselves and themselves only, if it doesn’t impact them it isn’t an issue that concerns them. Talk your shit Jazmine. #3 Tragic Now this song had been released prior to the deluxe but still makes it in my top 3 regardless. NOW LET'S RECLAIM OUR TIME. The message I got from this was to not waste time, act accordingly. Love is not just good sex and company. “Good loving is more than fucking, sex just ain’t enough”. “Can you turn me on with no penetration?” As much as these lyrics may make the song seem really sexual she is spitting facts, sexual attraction doesn’t just come from the act of sex or even the desire to want to have sex, so the question is can you do that? All in all this was absolutely hard. I’m going to keep listening for the next God knows when, I honestly wish Jazmine gave us more songs but I know there’s more from here this year. I wish I could attend the live shows but sadly no tour dates in London. Keep shining Jaz! got the BPW, sorry not sorry - Miriam.

Young T & Bugsey. It feels like it’s been a while. One of my favourite podcasters likes to take hiatuses and they remind me of him a little. Before the recent mixtape this dynamic duo’s last album was in 2020 titled “Plead the 5th”. It seemed to me that 2020 despite all the rubble, was a very prosperous year for them, they had major releases like “Princess Cuts” & “Don’t Rush” which were staple songs over the first lockdown. They also had a song with Fredo, “Bully Beef” which now has 2.1 million views on youtube. A very prosperous year indeed. Onto our top 5 of the Truth Be Told Mixtape. #1 Big Bidness. The chorus on this one gives me an NSG vibe, very catchy with verses that flow within an instant. I like the music video concept really shows that they’re about big business. #2 Blessings feat. Chronixx The sample on this one was what made it stick out to me, young T was speaking his truth disguised in an impeccable vibe. The choice of instruments for this beat doesn’t make it just sound like noise, it feels like genuine musical expertise. The afro/caribbean contrast fit together immaculately. This one is definitely on repeat. #3 Tense Although this is at number 3 it might actually be one of my favourites. The lyrics, the beat, the flow they initiated on the tune it’s honestly amazing. This was one of the songs I knew I liked very quickly, I don’t know what it is about this one but it holds a special place. #4 Caliente feat. Aitch I feel like these days a project won’t be without an aitch feature. The tropical atmosphere this tune takes me to reminds me of “Ay Caramba”. yet again with the catchy chorus and unmatched vibes. #5 Prada bae feat. Nafe Smallz I liked Nafe Smallz’s take on this one a lot. It is very fitting of his sound, the guitar and choice of percussion is what was highlighted to me as I listened, they compliment each other very well. It didn’t necessarily feel like young T & Bugsey’s song but I wasn’t mad at it because he did his thing. Overall, the mixtape to me was a good listen. I've got a couple reruns definitely and I’m excited for what these lots have for us next! Big Bidness yeah, big business - Miriam. |
