Music Of The Week Playlist.
So last night I was up at about 1am, watching the latest 90’s baby episode because the trailer on Instagram already showed me I was gonna enjoy this. The boys, being Temi, Fred and VP, have this ability to create such a welcoming atmosphere that they can talk to all their guests as if they’ve known each other for years. It was Scorcher’s persona that drew me to him, and how open he was about going to jail and evolving within the music scene. So I searched up his latest project at 2am now, on the phone to someone who’s halfway asleep, and I just let it play. Since then I’ve listened a following 3 times. Now before I start this I would just like to share something, this same person I was on the phone to picked up on a habit/almost sense I have. When some of the songs started I was quick to say whether I liked them and he was confused because I hadn’t even heard it yet. Obviously scouting this behaviour he asked me how and I gave him an answer. The answer was that certain songs have some familiarity to me, and I know myself so well, I know what I like. He then asked me what I mean by familiarity in which I said, familiar samples, beats, or a lyrical structure that’s trending. These are things I’m familiar with. He corned me a little bit and I’ll be real it felt weird saying, but that’s genuinely how I felt. My top 5 of The Drama - in no particular order just because I couldn’t choose. At number 1 we have Cookies feat. Ay Em I can’t put this album under any specific genre, and Scorcher himself said [it’s more about him making the tune, not what it classes under]. But in terms of songs that follow this same angelic, melodic structure Ay Em provided the best chorus in my opinion which all in all brought the song together. In none of the songs has Scorcher’s verses disappointed me. #2 ACG feat. Armor One of the best songs on this album hands down. The lyricism on this one is beyond this world. The verse from Armor, bare in mind he’s an artist I have no familiarity with, was the one I loved the most. It’s the way every line he said stuck in my head until I knew what it meant, and he has a certain energy around him, he compliments the beat crazily. This one is on repeat for definite. #3 Someone Else There’s not much to say about this one because he’s storytelling and a good story never hurts nobody. This one made me wonder though, what his music would be like if he hadn’t gone to jail. I know this may seem off-topic but I think tunes like this from him wouldn’t exist & the drama may have just been a straight drill/grime album. #4 Jurgen feat. D Double E A sampled looped piano from the Dr. Dre classic “Still D.R.E”, created the second song on this project. I think the element of nostalgia but acknowledgement of a new spin is what puts this in my top 5. #5 Body feat. Moelogo I included this song, last but not least, because it represents his versatility. The vibe alone on this song is different to a lot of the songs available here, but he talks like a lover, a confident man but also a man who’s not afraid of expression. It’s 3am, the album’s over - Miriam.

So on the tenth of December $ya blessed us with a deluxe of Sucka 4 Luv - making it an album now. Our new songs are as followed: Back 2 U Insane Next To Me & Hotel Cali. I did a top 3 on the EP, which features some of the songs that were available pre-album in case you're wondering why they're not mentioned here. Let's begin with Back 2 U. This song goes by so quickly for something that supposedly 3 minutes, I think it's less about the lyrics and more about the melody. That beat, produced by the lovely Sya herself, is mesmerising. My mind goes on a tangent when she repeats 'run away' really and truly making me feel like running away even though there's nothing for me to run from. Musical expertise at it's finest. Insane: Now I must be insane if I thought anything other than this being spectacular. She has the voice of an angel that literally glides across this song, the transitions between this to Blueskies as well genuinely makes it feel like just one big loop, I love the vibe of Blueskies too so they fit perfectly with one another. Next to Me: This song reminds me of "Smokin' out the Window", courtesy of Silk Sonic, the harmonies, the instruments, the fade out it's impeccable and the transition to Hotel Cali, wow, that intro is insane. Hotel Cali: I like her choice of flow on this specific song, I think the beat is a bit bland/has more space for interpretation which allowed her to really be in her bag with this one. The drums on this one? They're not even too technical but like it just works so well. It flows straight into Novacane beautifully which alongside a fan favourite is also my personal favourite song. With only 4 songs I think she made an amazing use of what's now her first album. Out of the new songs I'm battling between Back 2 U and Hotel Cali as my number 1's. I'm rating this album a solid 8 out of 10 solely because I want to be surprised with versatility in the future. $ya is still a Sucka 4 Luv, and so am I - Miriam. Music Of The Week Playlist.
Okay so, my friends are always telling me how delightful it is to listen to music whilst "under the influence" so I tried it the other day. Now normally I have "an over indulgent personality when it comes to music" - thanks Brent, so I feel it in my soul but have you ever had it speak to you? Your pain? It's like sitting in a room filled with speakers and as loud as they are, they're speaking so softly to you. Obviously because I'm a writer I've tried to implement this experience in one of my newer stories - unreleased - but it wouldn't have been detailed correctly if I myself hadn't experienced it right? Any description doesn't do justice to that sensation and I don't know whether it's because I am very attracted to music or because it's just a vibe but, I loved it. I'm not trying to make excuses for the use of substances either, I just feel like in my line of work there's certain things you've got to try. It is or in some cases almost similar to an emotional attachment, providing what or who you're attached to is referenced in the music, if that makes any sense. Just basically like a song speaking to something you might have recently gone through, good or bad. I feel like this is the main reason why people enjoy music, because you know someone somewhere is going through something similar to you. If you've listened to the album Heaux Tales by Jazmine Sullivan, which I highly encourage you do, there's a specific voice message of a woman talking about how her opinion on this male that she entertains is disregarded because of how GOOD the sexual aspect is (It must be - Ari’s tale), to me music in a nutshell. There are 1,000+ artists that have a bad reputation but release some good music and people still listen. It's about separating the art from the artist. Now for someone like R.Kelly I believe we shouldn't do this, because a man with habits of that likeness shouldn't have his pockets lined by music streams. It's condoning behaviour to some extent, and I do not condone. My perspective might seem hypocritical because I'm basically saying some bad things don't equate to others but you have to draw the line at some point. ANYWAYS my whole point is that under the influence, music is top tier. There really should be a way to contain the feeling for when you're listening to music, even if you're not on substances. Something I've learnt though is that a lot of the time I play music that suits whoever I'm with, only if of course they can hear what I'm listening to too. But when I'm under the influence? I play whatever comes to mind, and more than often they like it. I don't know why I'm reluctant to play specific genres around specific people but I'd adhere to what they like. Thoughts at 9am - Miriam.
Music Of The Week Playlist. An Evening With Silk Sonic indeed. Silk Sonic Intro: The idea of a host within an album is actually so creative. I think this was very effective and I can't imagine what it would feel like when performed at a live show, it would genuinely be a show. Kudos to Bootsy Collins, he did his thing. Leave The door Open: As the first actual song, they had me whipped already. The use of instruments, harmonies, oh my the harmonies and the melody just had me hooked. I was singing this for days, playing it in the gym, at home, anywhere I had the opportunity to, so much so my friends and family were singing the song too. Fly As Me: I don't know why but this song gives me Michael Jackson. It has so much flair to it and it's so easy to catch onto, it was a different take to the first song but had a similar impact. Even that part where they spell out "fly" has me wondering about the live show impact. Do I call what Bruno did on this song rapping? I have no idea but whatever his verses were, they were absolutely impeccable. After Last Night (Thundercat & Bootsy Collins): The 90s slow jam vibe is really seeping through. It's such a love song, and I'm in love with the way it promotes love. I can see people ice-skating, roller-skating or slow dancing to this song, it screams the Bobby Valentino, Jamie Foxx era. Smokin' Out The Window: "This bitch got me paying her rent, paying for trips..." Bruno? He literally depicted "we messing with the same girl" whilst also overdoing his role towards the female. His heartbreak is definitely vivid, but it happens to the worst of us. Drums and vocals on this song are insane, he's near screaming but it sounds heavenly. Put On A Smile: I like the way this song starts off, less upbeat shows a contrast to the other songs. It still follows the same topic, he's hurt and expressing his distress whilst building up the tension with how quick he sings, having the instruments follow his pace. Getting quicker and quicker. Vocals on this are also very crazy, the notes this man can hold are beyond me. There's a lot of "If I could" do this and that which is just him looking back on changes or advances he could've made. The name of the song is so genuine because he's going through pain but is trying to "Put On A Smile". 777: This song sits like generic Bruno, the Bruno I remember playing when I was much younger. Obviously the themes have changed, but the instrumental beat reminds me of music he used to make a couple years ago. Skate: Bruno has seen a woman he is very interested in and he wants to get to know her, so as he says "skate to me baby, slide your way on over". It seems like he's over this heartbreak he's portrayed over the last couple of songs and he's open to try something someone even, new. Blast Off: This tune is so fanatical, it's what you see doing with your other half in your dreams but you know it could never be realistic. But you could also look at it from another perspective being the places he takes his other half intimately. If you know what I mean. Anyways, to conclude this project was bewildering. I've always given Bruno Mars his accolades in terms of his musical ability but I hadn't really listened to him since "The Lazy Song". This honestly reminded me of his capabilities and I don't think I'll have a hiatus from his music ever again. An evening with me - Miriam. |
