Music Of The Week Playlist.
I’ll start by apologising for missing last week’s drop, honestly it’s been a bit of a hectic week but you know I’ve got double drops for you lot’s this week! Let’s begin with our top 5 of Kojey Radical’s “Reason to Smile.” #1 Reason to Smile feat. Tiana Major9 I personally love this as an intro, it introduces an unbeatable vibe that’s held throughout the whole project and his mum? She’s so precious. #2 Silk feat. Masego “Someone said I’m underrated, that was news to me”. Now I’m guilty of this because a couple of months ago someone had asked me for some underrated artists for a project they had undergo and I recommended Kojey. Under my spectrum Kojey is famous, but when I mention his name and others are confused? To me he has to be under this category, he doesn’t have the fame that he rightfully deserves. #3 Born feat. Cashh Cash himself is an interesting character, I’ve never listened to any of his music up until this but I know his story. I really like his take on this, his flow essentially drives the direction of this song but even when they both start rapping it’s like you can separate and conjoin heritage within music? I hope that makes sense. #4 Pressure feat. Shae Universe Now I’m a sly R&B babe, so Shae’s angelic voice of course will sway me. I actually like Kojey’s switch between simplistic and church organ like beats, his creative excellence really gives way for so much variety. I had heard Kojey talk about his rise from 2017-2020 with his struggle with a five figure debt up to making a mil before lunch. Genuinely he’s such a humble person and deserves all the accolades that come his way. #5 Payback feat. Knucks This beat yeah? Goodnight. A collaboration I never knew I needed but I’m glad I have. Knucks normally raps on much slower beats, so hearing him on this is amazing even the way he says “dickhead” has me in a chokehold. Kojey’s lyrical expertise never seems to fail to surprise me, if you really listen in no matter how upbeat the song is he’s spitting real shit. All in all, I believe that Kojey is a really humble person, from all the interviews I’ve watched and even when I saw him give his mum the first edition of “Reason to Smile” I just knew he was someone the UK has to cherish. I personally respect him as a Ghanaian just because of how his mum speaks about him, those voice notes bring the whole album together and give insight into how Kojey was raised to be the man he is today. Give me a reason to smile this week - Miriam.

Music Of The Week Playlist.
Now, personally I don’t like leaked music. First of all it can’t be accessed on main streaming platforms, so unless your deep diving on Soundcloud or using YouTube it doesn’t really support on the go vibes. Second of all, a lot of the time it’s unfinished music, so the artist hadn’t finished what they had planned for the tune. I think this is very bad for both the song and the artist as, if the finished song isn’t the version the consumers are more drawn to they - being the artist - lose out on tons of profit and essentially everything that comes with releasing a song, sometimes leaked songs aren’t even credited. Now due to this having leaked music also makes artists very reluctant to dropping the actual songs, alongside the mentality of “fuck it it’s already out there”, they’ve lost all possible “first listen” revenue and are essentially just claiming the replays. And also it just ruins the vibe, there’s no motivation or necessity to release leaked songs. This being said, here are the benefits of following the legalities of releasing music: Ensuring your pay. This one is especially if you’re an independent artist, you’ll be able to reap the full royalties of any song you release and confirm your sales are reflected properly in the charts. Reach your audience. Often leaked songs are just released, they’re not promoted or anything because of the fear of copyright. By the official release of a tune it will also reach the preferred demographic due to publicising etc. Reaching your audience drives up the sales, views, and allows for well respected reviews. Creating a music video It’s important that if a song that is believed to be a hit has a music video, people like visuals alongside music, you provide the consumers with an experience they’ll never forget and also a charting song, it’s a win win. I must say though I was in the comments of Drake leak and it sparked this idea. The person was like “nobody cares about legalities, you get what you get,” and there was an artist in the comments - ever so nice and respectful by the way - expressing the importance to an artist of having released their songs themselves. Obviously people will be people and just be ignorant because the person just went on to say “[how they’d prefer if he didn’t release it because they didn’t want it rinsed]” but as much as it’s about the consumer it’s about the artist too. At the end of the day why gate-keep a good song? You’ll get tired of it at one point too. It’s never really about having to go through the politics of music but some people need to understand that artists want to deliver at the highest standard possible, so don’t rush. We’re rushing Jhus though, WHERE’S THE ALBUM? - Miriam. |
