Music of the week playlist.
Now not a lot of people know about the artist $ya, and honestly she's a gem and shouldn't be hidden any longer so, let's talk about her piece "Sucka 4 Luv". I'll be working a little backwards by starting with my favourite but at number 1 of my list is, Novacane. This song was orchestrated so well and it genuinely makes me admire raw talent like this. Now obviously the word Novocaine may be more familiar to people as it's the correct spelling, but essentially she's taking the idea of a numbing drug and given it the characteristics of a person so "you know how to get the best of me", " a touch of your enthusiasm" are all lyrics indicating she's referring to a person, but rather it's the comfort this anaesthetic gives her. In my opinion Novacane is the best song on this EP, it just radiates everything I search for when I listen to $ya. Second on my top 3 is wwy? (where were you?) In this song all I could hear was the absence of love. But it was less about how it wasn't there, and more for how she yearned for it, she yearned for his recognition, and yearned for his presence but indeed, he wasn't there, he was with someone else. And last but not least on my top 3 is Blueskies. The beat was intriguing when I had first heard it, but her message was very clear. As the cycle of life, people get fed of relationships and decide to dispose of them. But to me this song was her last letter, her last call, her last text because she'd realised that she was worth so much more. The disguise that she describes this person as having was the face they'd hide behind so they could commit all those hateful acts against her. When $ya says "take a good look at me because I won't let you hurt me again" it showcased almost the emerging of an entirely new person, a person that wasn't to be taken advantage of. I am well aware there are three other songs on the EP but those were just my absolute favourites, I see $ya flourishing in the future if she continues creating beautiful projects like so. $ya is truly a sucka 4 luv - Miriam.

Over the next few weeks if you would like me to go through any specific songs/albums just fill out the survey on the homepage with the recommendation! Now for my favourite tunes this week: Bernie Mac - Odeal & Enny. This really surprised me, I feel like every time I hear Enny on a song I learn a different side to her musically. The duo created was definitely one I'd like to hear more often. Beggie Beggie - Ayra Starr feat. CKay. Ayra Starr was an artist I'd first discovered with her song 'Away'. The album, "19 & Dangerous" itself is amazing and I see her collaborating with artists like Tems, Oxlade, Omah Lay etc in the future. Beggie Beggie stood out to me specifically because it felt like love song but just not a generic one; Ayra told me a story and I listened. 20 10 20 - Burna Boy. It's been a year since the Nigerian government had sent it's army to kill peaceful protesters, and for this reason I think this song is so beautiful because Burna is a sensational artist over in Nigeria and I think it showcases that he is always there for his people. Ojuju - Troniq Music & Oxlade. When I had first listened to this I had it on repeat for days on end, then I even saw ykkub did a cover on it on his Instagram, which was impeccable might I add. The harmonies, the melody, the lyrics they all just piece together so nicely to create this masterpiece. Get Layd (EP). Took another listen to this EP a couple weeks ago and became obsessed all over again, Omah Lay just doesn't disappoint. Put me onto some of your favourites - Miriam.
"Out The Blue" was an extraordinary project of seven songs, but let's decompose.
Starting with our intro named "West", when I first heard this I felt like Sainte was dictating miscommunications within relationships, but then he also started speaking as if he wanted his listeners to essentially imagine themselves in his situation. 'Just have a little faith in me' was a line he had repeated multiple times through this song, and it resonated to me personally because it can be misconstrued for hope. Especially in this context there's a vast difference as he's referring to her needing to trust his instinct, not hope that he's thinking the way she'd desire him to. Next up is "Azure". This song specifically is one of my favourites on the EP, it was produced so beautifully and exceeded my expectations for sure. Even some of the features that I hadn't known, Chi Virgo and Tay Iwar, were just put in the best light possible when I heard this tune. It gave off a very tropical vibe and I deciphered it as Sainte coming to an end of this relationship he's displayed and accepting it's the right time to let go of 'his person'. "03'" to me exemplified Sainte laying out his walk of life. So practically all of his more personal life experiences laid out on the table. It was much less detached to this relationship metaphor, but he spoke his truth and that spoke to me. I think within every artists career they make a song like "Midnight" which is basically the aftermath of gaining some fame and talking about how they provided for their families. It's a lot more in depth circulating their childhood struggles and adulthood struggles, but yet also showcases a contrast between the two. Now "Summer Is Blue" is another one of my favourites on this EP, it was released before the actual project had come out and had just given me a gist of what to expect. I've always enjoyed listening to this because it gives me what 2020 and 2021 should've been and it reminds me that your life is whatever you make it. The track "You Never" was just so special, Sainte speaks about the loss of his sister and it was definitely inspirational because the loss of a family member is never easy, and I personally don't know how I would deal with losing one of my siblings. He briefly mentions the concept of "the grass being greener after pay," which I believe is very evident in this life, as in plain words, you forget how many things you have to pay for after you've been paid; it feels like you can pay for the earth. Last but not least, "No love". It was a great contrast to "You Never" and was much more upbeat considering what the previous song entailed. Sainte is just so open about his personal love experience within this project, and it's admirable because those kind of realisations also bring you closure as a person. So to end off my decomposition of "Out The Blue" I believe the EP was mainly centred around his approach to females as he grows up and his come-up within music. All of the songs were crafted so carefully and there were literally so many intricate sounds that seemed so unusual to me yet, fit so perfectly in the songs. Sainte has truly created a work of art - Miriam. |
