My current music update of September? Let's dive in. She's Not Anyone - D-Block Europe feat. Burna Boy DBE released their album on Friday but this song stuck out to me the most, obviously with that Burna feature it has to be heat but they've actually exceeded my expectations. The beat is quite simplistic, so the lyrics/theme genuinely carry this song. Burna came in clutch with the adlibs and hearing them articulate the vulnerable sides of love is what really draws me in. "Darling, I don't trust anyone she said, I'm not anyone". Girl Next Door - Efosa Now although I’ve been waiting aeons for him to release a preview he had called ‘Everlasting’, I’m loving this new drop. The vocals on this song is what I believe really brings it all together, he’s complimented by the beat and what he’s singing about is truly cute. The overall theme to me feels like feeling inferior to someone you’d like to pursue, so you don’t pursue them. “She don’t recognise me, I’m just the boy next door” & “She’s a big star but I still see her as the girl next door” is quite a nice contradiction as one perspective is seeing someone as they are, despite fame and the other is not seeing someone at all because they lack fame. If I - Marzi To be honest Marzi always knows what he’s doing with his music, I’ve said before that I believe Marzi has one of the most unique sounds I’ve hear in a really long time, and I do think that slowly other artists are hopping onto his vibe. This song is genuinely so sweet, and [when he’s talking about having peace] it ties in so beautifully with my most recent blog. Marz, you can sleep peacefully knowing that you’re music resonated with at least one person. This is the greatest sound for real. PDF/BE FREE - Odeal In total my favourite song out of these two is PDF but Be Free equally has me in bondage. It’s just “problem e no dey finish”, and the production on PDF is spectacular like everything just fits together nicely like a puzzle. I always like when Odeal projects the realities of his life through good music, I remember Poet was talking about how artists always need to digest the things they’ve been through before they actually turn it into a piece of artistry, otherwise it changes the delivery - and Odeal’s delivery is all hits no mrs. “What are you killing yourself for?” For real, omo 1 life. Medicine For the Soul - Ade Oyejobi Now this one is a little special to me because it’s poetry. Poetry is a form of art that I also like to express myself through, so I want to thank Ade for this amazing storytelling and indeed medicine for the soul. Even when he’s telling us his anecdotes I feel a place in every single scenario he details, a lot of us lived similar lives and were told the same thing about ‘the tv making our eyes square’ or ‘taking extra meat from the pot’ but it was how and who told us that makes us who we are today. Honestly the vibe on this is irreplaceable, it’s on repeat. XO - Jay O Now although I have played a part - however big or small he decides to describe it - in hustling this man for the song, it all came from a good place and with good intention might I add. I actually like the simplicity of this song, although production on this may have been mad, as a consumer there’s not too much going on in my ears and I’m genuinely able to take in every single sound. “No stress no enemy” - the boy was spitting, you’ve got no space for enemies if you refuse stress. Pretty women send XO’s. Yemasa - M’kido feat. Chinko Ekun Now I hate to admit TikTok is where I got this song from but it’s too good for me not to commemorate, and even though I don’t understand the lyrics - currently wait on me - it’s such a vibe. And then the sped up version? It literally only gets better. “I know you want what I have, I want what you have we can both exchange what we have,” the sexual aspects of any love song are mores subtle than they actually seem, I love the multiple interpretations of this line as if to say they can exchange anything because, anything he has is hers and vice versa. Black Barbie Drill Freestyle - Ling Hussle Now I’ve for one, heard this freestyle many months back but just as a snippet I don’t know why I never took the advance to listen to this song. For two, I’ve heard Ling Hussle a couple of times like on Stardom’s ‘Street Profit’ project, she bodied with the vocals. I love the beat she chose for this it reminds me of Cadet, and she just took it to another level. Personally, I don’t actually listen to a lot of female rappers, so to have discovered her sound is like a gold mine. She truly is ‘Special’. This month has been a great month for music, I just want to mention ‘Fallin for me’ by melvitto and ‘Soso/Lolo’ both by Omah Lay, I still have these songs on rewind - a bit sad about folasade though. Hoping to see more from all artists through the winter season. Waiting on that 4th album, Jae 5 X Hus - Miriam.

Now we’ve gathered here today, not for the Queen’s funeral but rather to discuss an album that is very, very close to my heart. TOP 5 of the Boy Alone album by Omah Lay - in order. At number one we have #1 soso. This song just sounds so spiritual to me. When this song first hit for me wasn’t the first time I listened to it but I genuinely don’t know what was in the air that day. I replayed it and it slapped so hard I can’t even describe it. At that point I had searched up the lyrics too which just made it ten times better because I was - for one finally able to understand Omah’s mumble rap - and also put a meaning behind the words soso, shibiri and oshimiri. osooso aka ‘soso’ = “hurry up and take my pains” - but soso is also a very popular female name in Nigeria (igbo to be specific) so it’s also deemed that he’s asking the woman to take his pains away. shibiri = “gossiping, trash talking etc.” - this part specifically to me is the best part of the song because “come and ginger me, only you dey feel my pains”, like are you crazy? This is mad to me. oshimiri = “the ocean” I never expected myself to be connected to a song like the way I deeply love this one but the backing vocals/adlibs the beat? As much as he’s talking to a woman it very much almost feels like a prayer because of how desperate he sounds to be relieved of his pain. #2 Bend You. Now this one only struck me today, so when I say songs feel different after the first couple of listens it is most definitely not a lie. I like the way he carries a theme with all the beats in this album, they don’t necessarily sound too different but you’re able to tell the difference. Bend You is one of those secret lover songs and as much as we act like it doesn’t happen, there’s a lot of things people do in the dark, “by my face I innocent, until I bend you” like I doubt you can interpret this song in any other way than sexual, but I love it nonetheless. #3 Woman “Odoyewu” is a phrase that I’ve heard multiple times in a Ghanaian household basically meaning like “love is forever/we love till death” and the fact that he’s referenced this when talking about having unprotected sex is kind of funny, but he’s just emphasising that even if he’s not strapped up she still has his back, and that’s what love is. “Anything I do is for my woman,” I’m in full support of this Omah Lay. #4 Temptation Now when I had first given this album its very first listen, this was one of my favourite songs. I think a very important part is “when I don backslide in my passions, and in my prayers, when I no get occupation only you see my potentials”. These couple lines here showcase the importance of not losing hope in someone, especially your partner, in their hardest moments. He also goes on to say, “I don’t even keep up with my family”, now this specific line reminds me of when I was watching 90’s baby and Grace was talking about how in a marriage a wife is sometimes convincing the husband to see his own family because majority of the the time she’s around hers. Maintaining relationships can sometimes be difficult and Omah Lay displaying his personal difficulties in the song is what makes it ever so beautiful. #5 Tell Everybody feat. Tay Iwar This song sticks out to me because to me it sounds like he’s telling her to tell everybody that they’re exclusive, “tell everybody, you and I, we ride or die”. At the time of hearing this song I had first interpreted it differently, the repetition of tell everybody sounded like she was telling everybody but yet what she was saying was nothing but a misconception. I don’t know, maybe I just wanted it to relate to me :( An honourable shoutout to the rest of the songs on the album, honestly it’s a no skips project and I could listen to it countless times; in fact I have. One of my favourite projects this year - Miriam.

This week we’ve returned with a project breakdown/my favourite pieces, I just want to start off by saying Melvitto is an amazing producer and honestly seeing his growth from about 2019 up until now has been a pleasure to watch and also consume as a fan of his music. Without futher ado, Melvitto’s new EP, Ovrdose, let’s get into our top 3 - in order might I add. #1 Fallin For Me - Melvitto & Oladapo. This beat is peak. I don’t know what it actually is about this song - and I’ve realised I say this a lot with songs I am in love with - but it’s just crazy. I genuinely wish I had more to say about it but I think that fact that it makes me speechless alone should say enough. The bass on this? And even though the verses aren’t too long they fit the theme of the song and the chorus perfectly pieces everything together on this one. Even the little sound like a DJ scratching a deck is unique in itself, it’s all the small details. “I dey love it baby, I dey like it when you call me daddy,” bro? Oladapo knew what he was doing sha. #2 Drifitng Thru - Melvitto & Dayor As the first song on the EP it does not disappoint the vibe at all. Melvitto this beat & Dayor’s vocals? It was a match made in heaven. The theme of beats he went for in this project actually remind me of when I had a piano at much younger and used to play around with the alien sounds - as wild as it seems the sounds are very similar. “Imagine if I met my demise, would all my people keep my name alive?” One thing I know is, even if he met his demise we’d all remember him through this song. #3 Company - Melvitto & Gabzy. This is that iconic Melvitto and Gabzy vibe. Now when I had heard a little snippet on Instagram around 2020 I wasn’t the biggest fan, but hearing how they pieced it all together from the transitions, fades, adlibs it’s genuinely so majestic and I love the way it fits so well with the theme of the EP. Melvitto honestly executed such a beautiful concept. Honourable mentions to Folasade, Je M’appelle and also Run My Way, these three are also very immersive pieces and are close on my favourites list, just sadly didn’t make it to my top 3 this week. I do remember saying we were genuinely missing a Wande Coal feature and I still stand by that statement, because that duo is also unbeatable. stream Ovrdose - Miriam.

I did say I’d be back with part two and this week seems perfect to do it. I actually want to start with an artist named, Mulla Stacksz. Now last month or so I rediscovered “Diana freestyle”, which had been on my 2020 playlist. I’ve been bumping it as my villain theme song throughout this summer but it has only just now come across my mind that this is the same Mulla we used to vibe to a couple of years ago. He gave us songs like “She Moving” which was definitely a movement because I still know the lyrics to this day. Even the remix that features Paigey Cakey goes hard, some may even say harder than the original. #2 Zie Zie. Now if anyone has forgotten about this time? You weren’t really living. Zie Zie produced us songs like, Hello, Mingle, Fine Girl, Dolce & Gabana and many many more. It was something about Zie Zie’s sound that was so original in that 2017-18 era he literally always had us on edge until his next release. In that afroswing period of time he was definitely one of the most popular artists in the genre - by my books anyway. #3 JHus. Hustla can you release some music? I personally am still in a Jhus chokehold, the threshold he instated when he dropped, Dem Boy Paigon, Did you See, Friendly is still maintained but modernised. I like Hus so much because his discography is impenetrable and has an impeccable stage presence - I’ll stick by his work until he proves me wrong. There really isn’t much to say about him because his constant progress is literally showcased in his discography. #4 Mostack. I want to talk about him because he just recently dropped Can’t Forgive which personally reminded me of his old music - he’s been holding this one for so long but it’s a tune that is representative of both his old and current style. In the golden age Mo had songs like Do what I wanna, Ussy Ussy, Liar Liar - the whole of highstreet Kid was such a memorable point in time I wish I could relive it all to be honest. Equally there were so many stacko songs that were out that I wish I had known around that time - an irreplaceable artist if you ask me. #5 Abracadabra. Now we all know Abra used to eat up the music scene with his valentine tunes, him and Kush were an iconic duo when it came to the beginning of each year. He also had us with the robbery remix which I can still listen to because it feels like a big showcase of growth for all three artists. Do we even have to talk about Dun Talkin’? Mad about Bars? Art Of War? That song was very aggressive but yet I just couldn’t take it off my playlist :) After he emerged in 2016 this man has never disappointed me. I’ve still got so many artists to talk about, maybe link me for part 3 - Miriam. |
